Israel wants press away from Dubai hit

Israel has called on the United Arab Emirates to stop releasing images of those involved in the killing of a leading Hamas leader in Dubai earlier this year.

"It was told to us through another party that Israel was disturbed by the release of the pictures of those involved, saying it would be harmful to their children and wives," Lt. Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim said.

Notice how it is OK for Israel to refer to immigrants as criminals, whereas if same happened in Europe, the same "usual suspects" would scream "isms" (racism, antisemitism, fascism, etc.) and ask for those who dared to say such "insensitive" things being summarily emprisoned. Such statements never appear in mainstream media, without "nazi" or other labels attached, but when Israel says it, BBC slavishly airs their "concern" for "Israel having its Jewish character in danger" (saw that personally)...

Israel sends SOS to world leaders to "save" Mubarak

Hebrew newspaper sources have revealed the existence of an "urgent" message sent by the Israeli government at the end of last week to a number of world leaders. Aimed particularly at the US and the EU, Israel is appealing to the leaders to "save" Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's regime.

In its 31 January Hebrew edition, Haaretz said that the Israeli government has resorted to sending secret communications to a number of world leaders in which it has stressed the importance of Egypt's stability to the security and stability of the region as a whole. The messages also call for restraint in public criticism of Mubarak. Political sources in Israel highlight the importance of Egypt's stability for the Zionist state, suggesting that any "fundamental" change in the Cairo regime would lead to an "upheaval in the notion of Israeli security"

What would happen if free elections would take place today in Egypt

According to the most recent Pew Research Center poll:

– Twice as many Egyptians identify themselves as Muslim fundamentalists as identify themselves as “modernizers.”

– By 95 to 2, Egyptians believe Islam should play a large role in Egyptian politics.

– While 48 percent of Egyptians say suicide bombings are never justified, 32 percent say “rarely,” 12 percent say “sometimes,” and 8 percent say suicide bombings are “often” justified. Half the people of Egypt believe there are times a suicide bomb is the right answer.

– Half of all Egyptians have a favorable view of Hamas, and one in five has a favorable view of al-Qaida.

– Three in four Egyptians believe cutting off the hand of a thief is proper punishment. Four in five favor stoning adulterers to death. And 84 percent favor executing Muslim converts to Christianity.

– Eighty-two percent of Egyptians regard the United States unfavorably, and 48 percent rate America “very unfavorably.”

– In a Zogby poll in 2010, 90 percent of Egyptians named the United States and Israel as threats, 86 percent said Iran had a right to pursue nuclear weapons, and 77 percent thought it would be a good thing if Tehran got the bomb. [Egypt, Democracy and Islam, Pew Research Center, January 31, 2011]

Germany doubles aid to Holocaust survivors to €110m

Claims Conference VP Shlomo Gur: The money is for social and nursing services for Holocaust survivors worldwide. Half of the 520,000 survivors reside in Israel. 

The German government will double aid to Holocaust survivors to €110 million in 2011, from €55 million, Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) VP Shlomo Gur told the Knesset Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Affairs Conference today.
