Israel Navy gets fifth Dolphin-class submarine from Germany

The INS Rahav is Israel's fifth Dolphin-class submarine. All were acquired from Germany. The fourth vessel, the INS Tanin, was launched in Germany a year ago and is expected to arrive in Israel and be put into service by the navy in the next few months.

Germany will cover a third of the total cost, paying 135 million euros. Similar agreements were reached with Germany for both the Rahav and the Tanin.

Germany’s debt for the “crimes against humanity” of the Holocaust means for it “the existence and security of Israel are not negotiable”, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told attendees of a memorial service to Berlin’s Jewish deportees last Thursday.

"The right-wing scene has always had access to the book," said a news release from the party, "and an annotated edition simply contributes to the wider dissemination of fascist thinking under the guise of scholarship." The Left Party, particularly strong in eastern Germany, maintains that Mein Kampf should be banned completely in Germany, because it constitutes inflammatory fascist propaganda.

But the historian Frei responds that "in order to prevent publication, the state would either have to prove it was inflammatory or create a new law. Why should we give Adolf Hitler the honor of going to so much trouble so long after his death?"

Israel gets two more German submarines (for free)

Including the two new ones, Israel has five German submarines -- the most expensive weapon platforms in Israel's arsenal.

Germany, which believes it has a historic responsibility to help Israel because of the mass murder of Jews in World War II, donated the first two submarines after the 1991 Gulf War.

It split the cost of the third with the Jewish state.

Another reason why some Israelis are coming here is that Jews whose parents or grandparents were persecuted by the Nazis are eligible for a German passport, and are enticed by the potential benefits of being an EU citizen.
Israeli sociologist Sima Zalcberg found that about 100,000 Israelis hold a German passport, and about 7,000 people per year apply for citizenship at the German embassy in Tel Aviv.
